After a casual viewing of both Gundam 00 and Code Geass, it's become clear that there are a number of similar plot points between the two series. This post is intended as an easy way to list some of them. However, due to the spoiler nature of these plot points, they'll be found in the first post in the Comments section.

A list of similar items in both series -
Both series feature a Japan that is a part of a larger country occupying both North and South America. Ironically, the map of the world shown at the start of the second episode of Season 2 of Code Geass shows that Great Britain is not a part of the Britannian Empire (I believe that there was a brief mention in the first season of a British royal leaving for the New World at an unknown date in the distant past).
In addition to the super power occupying the Western Hemisphere and Japan, in both series the world also contains two other superpowers. One is centered around the EU. The other is centered around China. In both series, Russia appears split between these powers.
In both series, the protagonist's side contains an amazingly gifted strategist.
Both series have protagonists that killed a sibling.
Both series have characters that have murdered a parent for misguided reasons (note that the character in Code Geass that killed a sibling is not the same one that has killed a parent).
Both series end the first season with a huge climactic battle that goes badly for the protagonist's side.
Both series indicate that certain characters have unusual abilities through the characters' eyes.
Both series use lances on mecha, which are an unusual weapon in a 'real robot' setting (the lances in Gundam 00 appear at the very end of episode 25, while lances are seen throughout Code Geass).
I suspect that this list is by no means exhaustive, but just the ones found on it are unusual.
